The CIM Level 6 Diploma sits at the same level as a bachelor's degree on the UK's qualification framework, but it is not a degree. It is a professional marketing qualification awarded by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), not a university, so you will not graduate with a BA or BSc. Whether an employer or university treats it as equivalent to a degree is their decision, so check with them if it matters for your plans.
What does Level 6 mean?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, qualifications are grouped into levels from entry level up to Level 8, according to how demanding they are. GOV.UK lists Level 6 as including a degree with honours (such as a BA or BSc), an ordinary degree without honours, a degree apprenticeship, a graduate diploma and a Level 6 diploma, award or certificate. Level 7 covers master's degrees and postgraduate diplomas.
So “Level 6” describes how difficult the learning is, not what kind of award you get. A bachelor's degree and a Level 6 diploma share a level, but they are different types of qualification.
Is CIM Level 6 the same as a bachelor's degree?
No. They are at the same level, but they are not the same thing:
- Same level. Both are Level 6 on the UK framework. Some study centres go further in their own words (Oxford College of Marketing's course page says “equivalent to an undergraduate degree”), but the safest, checkable statement is that the two share a level.
- Different award. A degree is awarded by a university and carries a degree title. The CIM Level 6 Diploma is awarded by CIM and is called a Diploma.
- Different focus. A degree is usually broader and more academic. The Diploma is built around professional marketing practice at management level.
If you need to know whether it counts as a degree for a specific job application, visa, or university entry, ask the organisation concerned. That decision is theirs, not ours or CIM's.
What is the CIM Level 6 Diploma?
The CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional & Digital Marketing is a management-level marketing qualification. According to CIM, it is made up of 50 credits: a mandatory Strategy and Planning module, core modules in Commercial Intelligence and Societal Impact, and a choice of specialist modules such as AI Marketing, Content Strategy, Ecommerce, SEO & Paid Search Management and Social Media Management. It is assessed online, and CIM gives a typical study time of 9–12 months.
CIM describes it as designed for experienced marketers, for people who manage marketing activity, campaigns or budgets, or who are preparing for more leadership responsibility. At Business Consort Academy, we've been a CIM Accredited Study Centre since 2005 and we teach it entirely online, with 1:1 tutor support. You can see the details on our CIM Level 6 Diploma page, or read our plain-English guide to what the Diploma is.
Is CIM Level 6 recognised by employers?
CIM is the professional body for marketers, and the Diploma is awarded by CIM itself. We cannot promise how any individual employer will view it, and we would be wary of anyone who does. The sensible check is the one that matters for you: look at job descriptions for the roles you want and see whether they ask for CIM, a degree, or “equivalent qualification or experience”, and ask the employer directly if you are unsure.
Many people use the Diploma to back up years of practical experience with a recognised credential, to move from a doing role into a managing one, or to show professional development to an employer.
To read more about how it compares, see our guide CIM Diploma vs Marketing Degree.
Who should study CIM Level 6?
CIM Level 6 usually suits people who already work in marketing and want to step up. It is a good fit if you:
- have around two years of marketing experience and want a formal qualification to match it;
- are moving into a role that manages campaigns, budgets or a team;
- already hold a CIM Level 4 qualification, or a degree with substantial marketing content, and want to progress; or
- run your own business and want a structured, strategic grounding in marketing.
Entry criteria vary by centre. CIM Academy lists typical criteria on its Level 6 Diploma page, such as a CIM Level 4 qualification, a relevant degree or around two years of operational marketing experience. At Business Consort Academy, there are no specific entry requirements, as our course is built from foundation to advanced. Our guide to entry requirements explains more.
What is the difference between CIM Level 4 and Level 6?
Level 4 is an earlier step on the framework and Level 6 is a more advanced one. On GOV.UK's list, Level 4 includes higher education certificates and Level 5 includes foundation degrees, so Level 6 sits above both. In CIM terms, the Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing is aimed at people building their marketing experience, while the Level 6 Diploma is aimed at those managing marketing activity. A Level 4 CIM qualification is one of the typical entry routes to Level 6.
| CIM Level 4 Certificate | CIM Level 6 Diploma | Bachelor's degree | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level (UK framework) | Level 4 | Level 6 | Level 6 |
| Awarded by | CIM | CIM | A university |
| Award title | Certificate | Diploma | Degree (for example BA or BSc) |
| Aimed at | People building marketing experience | Experienced marketers moving into management | People starting a university course |
| Study time | Check with your study centre | CIM states 9–12 months - Business Consort Academy offer a fast track 12-24 weeks route as standard | Usually several years |
What is the difference between CIM Level 6 and a university degree?
The main differences are the type of award, the route in and the focus:
- Route in. A degree normally follows school or college qualifications. Many centres expect a Level 4 qualification, a relevant degree, or around two years of operational marketing experience for the CIM Diploma. At Business Consort Academy, there are no specific entry requirements.
- Time. A bachelor's degree usually takes several years. CIM states 9–12 months for the Diploma. Our fast-track learning material at Business Consort Academy lets you finish in as little as 12–24 weeks.
- Focus. A degree gives broad academic grounding. The Diploma concentrates on applying marketing strategy, commercial thinking and digital channels at work.
- Assessment. The CIM Diploma is assessed online. Degrees use a wider mix of exams, essays and projects.
- Recognition. A degree is a universally understood academic award. A CIM Diploma is a professional award recognised in marketing, and how it is treated elsewhere depends on the organisation.
Neither is better in every case. If you do not have a degree and want to keep working while you study, the Diploma can be a practical route. If you want an academic degree title, only a university can give you that.
Can CIM Level 6 help me become a Chartered Marketer?
It can be part of the journey. CIM describes Chartered Marketer as the highest level of recognition in marketing, and says CIM membership is the route to it. Members log their continuing professional development (CPD) on CIM's platform as part of working towards it. The Level 6 Diploma gives you a recognised qualification and CIM membership while you study, but it does not make you a Chartered Marketer on its own.
Where can I study CIM Level 6 online?
You can study it online with us at Business Consort Academy, or with other CIM study centres such as CIM Academy, MMC Learning, Oxford College of Marketing and Professional Academy. The qualification is the same whichever you choose, because CIM sets the syllabus and assessments. Prices and support differ, so see our comparison of the best CIM Level 6 Diploma providers and our full cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is CIM Level 6 a degree?
No. It is at the same level as a bachelor's degree on the UK qualification framework, but it is a professional Diploma awarded by CIM, not a degree from a university.
What qualification is CIM Level 6 equivalent to?
It sits at Level 6 on the UK framework, the same level as a bachelor's degree. Whether an employer or university treats it as equivalent is their decision.
Is Level 6 undergraduate or postgraduate?
Level 6 is the level of an undergraduate degree. Postgraduate qualifications, such as master's degrees, are Level 7.
Is CIM Level 6 recognised internationally?
CIM is an international professional body with study centres and members around the world, but recognition varies by country and employer. Check with the organisation you want to use it with. We cannot guarantee how it will be treated abroad.
Is CIM Level 6 harder than Level 4?
Yes, it is more advanced. Level 6 expects you to plan and apply marketing strategy at management level, rather than learn the foundations. Our guide How hard is the CIM Level 6 Diploma? goes into the assessments and how to prepare.
Can I study Level 6 without a degree?
Yes, at Business Consort Academy. There are no specific entry requirements, as our course is built from foundation to advanced. Other centres set their own criteria. CIM Academy, for example, lists a CIM Level 4 qualification, a Level 4 or Level 6 apprenticeship, a relevant degree, or around two years of operational marketing experience. Confirm the criteria with your study centre.
Can CIM Level 6 help me progress into management?
It is designed for people moving into management and covers strategy, commercial intelligence and your choice of specialist area. It can support a move into management, but it is not a guarantee of a promotion. Your experience, results and employer matter too.
